Joe Bonsall, singer of the Oak Ridge Boys, dies at the age of 76

Joe Bonsallthe tenor singer of the music group The Oak Ridge Boys, died on July 9 after battling ALS for four years. He was 76 years old.

The news was reportedly relayed by a family spokesman via DeadlineAt the time of his death, Bonsall lived in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

Bonsall’s death comes just days after Rusty Goldenthe son of the Oak Ridge Boys member William Lee Golden who was also a well-known singer and musician, has died. The cause of death was not disclosed.

The band is known for hits such as “Elvira,” “Bobbie Sue,” and “I Guess It Never Hurts To Hurt Sometimes.” The Oak Ridge Boys won five Grammys and were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015.

Shortly after his 50th anniversary as a singer with the band, Bonsall announced his retirement from the tour at a concert in January this year.

Accordingly DeadlineBonsall said of his decision: “Many of you know that I have been battling a slow-onset neuromuscular disease for over four years. I’m now at the point where I can’t walk, so I’ve basically retired from driving. It’s just become too difficult.”

“It’s been a great 50 years and I’m grateful to all the Oak Ridge Boys, the band, the crew and the staff for the constant love and support they’ve given me throughout,” he added.

A statement from Bonsall’s representatives after his death said: “Joe loved to sing. He loved to read. He loved to write. He loved to play the banjo. He loved to work on the farm. And he loved the Philadelphia Phillies. But Jesus and his family always came first – and we will see him again on the promised day.”

The singer leaves behind his wife, Maria Bonsalltheir daughters Jennifer And Sabrinaas well as two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
