Lena Dunham is working on a new television series, but has decided against the lead role.

The 38-year-old multi-talent helped create the new rom-com series Too muchwhich is semi-autobiographical, and they have Hacking actress Meg Stalter as the main actor.

In a new interview Lena reveals the reason why she decided against the semi-autobiographical role and Meg instead.

“It’s about an American woman in London who has had a bad breakup in New York and is confused. She meets a punk musician who is recovering from it and tries to figure out if they can have a life together. It’s not a big step. But I knew from the start that I wasn’t going to be the star.” Lena told The New Yorker“First, because I had seen Meg Stalter‘s work and I was very inspired by her. She’s incredible; I think people are going to be blown away. We know how funny she is. But then when she walks into a dramatic scene, you think: Oh, we’ve got a little Meryl Streep on our hands! I have been thinking a lot about how it allows women to be complicated on television and still be accepted, seen and understood? There is an openness to Meg‘s presence, which I think makes a big difference. She has the opposite of a resting bitch face. She has a resting angel face.”

However, the reason she is not appearing in the series is because her mental health is her top priority and she does not want to be subjected to critical scrutiny of her body again.

“I also believe that I was not prepared to experience something like what I had experienced Girl at that point in my life. Physically, I just wasn’t ready to have my body dissected again. It was a difficult decision not to pour Meg– because I knew I wanted Meg– but admitting that to myself,” she said. “I used to think that if you just keep going and don’t care what other people think, you win. I forgot that winning is really just about protecting yourself and doing what you have to do to keep working.”

“No matter what people think, I went in this direction because I wanted to be an artist. I was never really a person who – even though people might not believe it because of the structure and content of my work – was incredibly interested in attention,” Lena added: “What gives me a sense of strength is my work. It’s the only thing I want to do. It’s my only love in life, apart from the people closest to me, my pets and books.”
