“AGT”: 14-year-old singer receives Howie Mandel’s Golden Buzzer
A 14-year-old AGT emotional cover version of I don’t belong to you was so stunning that it received a rare Golden Buzzer from Howie Mandel.
Reid Wilson appeared on America’s Got Talent episode on July 9 and gave a brief backstory before taking the stage. As the teenager explained in an interview, he has always loved to sing. When he was little, “he would run around the house screaming at the top of his lungs.”
As Reid grew older, he honed his talent. As the middle child of four siblings, he didn’t want to be “forgotten,” so he made sure to get noticed by singing for his parents and siblings.
Until the step in front of the AGT Judge, he had never appeared for anything other than a few family gatherings.
“I would love to be the next superstar,” he said with a dreamy smile. “…I’m definitely nervous. But I’m going to give it my all in those two minutes, sing with all my heart and try not to miss a note.”
That’s exactly what Reid Wilson did. He sang from the heart and hit every note of Lesley Gore’s 1963 hit. His unique and powerful voice captivated Heidi Klum, Simon Cowell, Sofía Vergara – and especially Howie Mandel.
As Reid sang, Howie sat back, folded his hands in front of his chest, and absorbed each lyric with a smile. Simon was so moved that he closed his eyes to make the most of his voice.
“You know, I closed my eyes for a moment when you were singing, just to listen to your voice, and then I opened them again and there was this sweet, young child,” Simon said.
“Do you believe in dreams?”
Howie let the other judges express their praise before he spoke and finally presented Reid with the Golden Buzzer.
“I was taken aback because I was surprised… First of all, you’re just a 14-year-old boy from Alabama. So I would imagine if I put myself in your shoes, you were very nervous and actually came across as incredibly nervous. That was a surprise,” he said. “And you know what? This is when dreams come true.”
“Do you believe in dreams?” Howie asked before Reid replied, “Yes.”
“Well, one of them is about to come true,” Howie shouted before pressing the Golden Buzzer.
