Notre Dame fans react after losing their top recruit to Michigan

The Michigan Wolverines made two big recruiting achievements on Monday, signing two four-star prospects for the 2025 class. One of those commitments came from Ivan Taylor, one of the best safeties in the country who was Notre Dame’s highest-rated commit until Monday. With Taylor, Michigan now has two top-10 safeties in its 2025 class – which sets the Wolverines up quite well for the future in the secondary.

It’s never easy to lose a highly prized recruit, but it becomes even harder to accept when that highly prized recruit moves on to a rival program. For Notre Dame fans, losing Taylor to Michigan was so painful that they had to resort to a coping mechanism we see far too often from fans these days.

“If Taylor thinks he has more advantages at Michigan – especially in life after football – he wasn’t smart enough to go to Notre Dame anyway,” wrote one fan.

“Find someone who isn’t afraid to compete,” wrote another fan.

Look, I get it. It’s never nice to lose a player to a rival program — especially when it’s your top team. But the idea that Taylor, one of the best safeties in the country, is afraid to compete? That’s just a wild claim from Notre Dame fans. It’s almost as if they’re completely unaware that the Michigan Wolverines have been one of the most dominant programs in the country for the past three seasons, winning three consecutive Big Ten championships and a national championship in 2023. That success is thanks in large part to one of the most dominant defensive units in all of college football, something that would definitely appeal to a young (and extremely talented) defensive recruit.

I think the good news for Irish fans is that Notre Dame still boasts a No. 4 recruiting class in 2025 according to 247 Sports. Michigan, which was outside the top 50 just over a month ago, is now knocking on the door to get into the top 10 – currently ranked No. 11 nationally.
