Jane Fonda remembers Donald Sutherland after the actor’s death: “Inconsolable”

Jane Fonda, who starred alongside Donald Sutherland in the 1971 thriller Klutehas expressed her heartfelt condolences to her former colleague. Sutherland died on Thursday at the age of 88 in Miami after a long illness.

“I am stunned to hear of the passing of Donald Sutherland. He was my amazing co-star in Klute and we loved working together,” Fonda said in an Instagram post that included a photo of the two on the set of the film. “Donald was a brilliant actor and a complex man who shared many adventures with me, such as the FTA Show, an anti-Vietnam War tour that featured 60,000 active duty soldiers, sailors and Marines in Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines and Japan in 1971. I am heartbroken.”

Sutherland played the titular detective John Klute in the film, while Fonda played Bree Daniels, a call girl who Klute tries to protect from a killer who is pursuing her. Fonda won her first Oscar for her performance in the film. Klute was one of Sutherland’s most memorable roles. As Fonda wrote in her memoirs about Sutherland My life so far: “I found his slim, lanky build and his drooping, pale blue eyes particularly appealing. He also had something of an old-world gentleman about him.”

Sutherland’s death sparked a wave of condolences from Hollywood contemporaries such as Ron Howard, Edgar Wright and others.
