AGT singer Alex Sampson sings the original song “Pretty Baby”

It’s easy to fall in love with a singer quickly when the elements fit. That’s what happened during Alex Sampson’s audition on America’s Got TalentYou could feel the audience fainting.

How to watch

Regard America’s Got Talent Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and the next day on Peacock.

In the time it took him to croon “Pretty Baby, Is It Crazy?”, the 20-year-old singer-songwriter from small town Ontario, Canada, revealed that he has great talent, a soft voice and a tender heart.

Before the audition, he explained that at the beginning of his career he sang for hours in the car wash in his hometown.“The acoustics were beautiful,” he said. “This will be the greatest performance of my life.”

After confirming to judge Heidi Klum that he was indeed “a little nervous” and laughing with Simon Cowell about wearing similar-looking black T-shirts, he reflected on Sofia Vergara’s question about what he would do if he won the $1 million prize.

“Honestly, I’m just trying to get through this audition,” he said. Frankly, Alex aced it.

What song did Alex Sampson sing?

“I’m going to sing a song I wrote… it’s called ‘Pretty Baby,'” Alex explained. Then he exhaled deeply and let the music speak for itself.

TIt was obvious that this sweet ballad was in the key of love. It began like this:

Oh, maybe I was a fool
Maybe I tend to lose
My balance when it comes to you
Oh, I recently got a new
Girl who is called “mon amour”
For you I would give up my habits.”

This led to questions:

“Is this too early
Do you want me too?”

Already in the first chorus it was clear that the cheering audience was rooting for this charmer to get the girl:

“Pretty baby (Pretty baby)
Is it crazy? (Is it crazy?)
I think I’ve known for some time
Kiss me now, make me wild
Pretty baby (pretty baby)
Maybe one day (hope maybe one day)
We will look up to the stars
Hold you in my arms
Pretty baby.”

On X, formerly Twitter, Alex posted in October that he was involved in the writing of “Pretty Baby.”

“It has to be one of my favorite songs I’ve ever been involved in,” he wrote.

What did the judges say?

Judging by their reactions to Alex’s performance, the judges were clearly impressed by the overall package he presented.

“T“Here’s something about you and your presence,” Sofia Vergara said. “You said you were nervous, but no, it didn’t feel like you were nervous when you started singing. I think it was a great audition.”

Heidi Klum admitted that she sensed Alex’s nervousness but overlooked it. “It made you more real in a way,” she said. “I love the vibe too and I’m here for it.”

For Howie Mandell, Alex was an inspiration for a throwback to the 1960s and the voice of the lead singer of Herman’s Hermits. “Have you ever heard him?” he asked Alex, who didn’t know him.

“I like that,” Howie added. “And it’s kind of retro and nobody does that anymore. So not only do I think it’s good, but I think you’re creating something that doesn’t exist.”

Simon Cowell agreed with the vintage sound and originality. “To me, that song could have been written in the ’50s or ’60s, which I thought was really clever. It’s the kind of song you’d hear in a Martin Scorsese film, you know, from that era. It was very authentic. I really, really, really enjoyed that audition.”

What came next were four really, really, really enthusiastic yes votes. Pretty impressive!
