Blackpink singer Jennie makes history with her biggest solo hit

Blackpink singer Jennie scored the hit of her solo career with “One of the Girls,” which featured The Weeknd as frontman. The song, which is also credited to actress Lily Rose Depp, was a chart-topping hit and now it’s being given a special honor… one that helps Jennie make history.

“One of the Girls” was certified platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), a certification given to songs and albums once they have sold at least one million copies in the United States (sales and streaming equivalents).

Jennie receives her first platinum award when “One of the Girls” earns the plaque, but her victory is bigger than just one musician’s catalog.

The Blackpink star is now the first South Korean solo artist to receive a platinum single in the US. Very few solo artists from this Asian country have managed to snag even a single award in America. Now, a female star has finally managed to achieve this feat.

Several other solo artists from South Korea, such as Psy and some members of BTS, have also achieved platinum certification with one of their songs. Currently, it seems that fewer than five solo artists from that part of the world have received such an award in America.

As a member of Blackpink, Jennie already has one gold single to her credit. The girl group’s “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” was certified gold in the summer of 2019 for selling half a million units. Since then, none of the group’s albums or songs have received an award from the RIAA, although that will likely change over time.

“One of the Girls” was released in June 2023 as part of a short collection led by The Weeknd. The song was written for his TV show. The Idolwhich had a short life on HBO. The single reached number 51 on the Hot 100 and climbed to a number of other Billboard rankings.
