Report: 27 dead in attack on Gaza school offering shelter to Palestinians

Palestinian territories:

Palestinian sources said at least 29 people were killed in an attack on a school that serves as a shelter for displaced people in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday. It was the fourth such incident in four days. Hamas blamed Israel for the deaths.

The Israeli military told AFP it had carried out a strike in the area and was currently investigating the incident. It acknowledged that it had carried out three more strikes on schools in the Gaza Strip that are being used as emergency shelters since Saturday.

The attack hit the entrance of Al-Awda School in Abasan, said a source at Nasser Hospital in the nearby southern city of Khan Yunis, where the victims were taken. Twenty-nine people were killed and dozens injured, she added.

The Hamas-run government media office accused Israel of carrying out a “horrific massacre” and put the death toll at 29. The “majority” were women and children.

“We were sitting at the entrance of the school… suddenly and without warning, rockets were fired,” a witness, Mohammed Sukkar, told AFP about Tuesday’s attack.

The Israeli military said the air force used “precision munitions” to attack a “terrorist from Hamas’ military wing” near the school.

“The incident is being investigated,” the military said in a statement.

Officials in the Hamas-controlled area said at least 20 people were killed in earlier attacks on the schools.

Israel said all three attacks targeted militants hiding in the schools.

On Saturday, an Israeli attack hit the UN-run Al-Jawni school in Nuseirat, central Gaza, killing 16 people, according to the Health Ministry.

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said that 2,000 people were there at the time.

The following day, four people were killed in an attack on the Holy Family School in Gaza City, according to Gaza Civil Defense.

The Latin Patriarchate, which owns the school, said hundreds of people crowded the premises at the time.

Another UNRWA-run school in Nuseirat was hit on Monday. A local hospital said several people had been taken for treatment.

Israel said it had targeted “several terrorists” who were using the school as cover.

Hamas denies Israeli accusations that it uses schools, hospitals and other civilian facilities for military purposes.

According to the UNRWA, more than 500 people were evacuated from schools and
