Marcedes Lewis comments on Packers quarterback Jordan Love’s contract

Jordan Love declined to discuss contract negotiations or a possible extension during the team’s offseason program this spring.

But until he signs a new contract with the Green Bay Packers, everyone else will be talking for him.

One of them is a former teammate who knows how the NFL works.

In a recent discussion about Love’s contract among panelists on ESPN’s “NFL Live,” tight end Marcedes Lewis, who played with Love for three seasons, made his point.

“Pay this man,” tweeted Lewis, who now lives in Chicago.

But after a full season as a starter with 18 total regular season appearances and two playoff games on his resume, should Love set the bar high for the quarterback market?

Louis Riddick, an NFL analyst for ESPN who has worked in NFL front offices for years, said contracts are not about what a player has done, but what he can do.

“Contracts are meant to be a hedge of future performance,” Riddick said. “You don’t pay guys after they’ve played together for 10 years. With these quarterbacks, the price is just going to go up as the salary cap goes up and revenue goes up.”

That’s why Riddick says the Packers should sign Love.

“Go ahead and get it now because he’s the future,” Riddick added.

Jordan Love contract

The 26-year-old Love is under contract with the Packers through the 2024 season.

Last year, he signed a one-year contract extension worth $22.5 million instead of an option for a fifth year in his rookie contract.

Now that he’s shown he can be the long-term solution to the Packers’ quarterback position, Love is on track to become one of the NFL’s highest-paid players, likely in the $50-55 million per year range if other recent contracts are any indication.

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff (four years, $212 million) and Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (five years, $275 million) signed contract extensions this offseason.

“If I were Jordan Love (and I mean that in negotiations), I would be better than Trevor Lawrence,” Riddick said. “I was better than Jared Goff.”

Will this extension take place before the start of the season?

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said during the NFL owners meeting in March that there had already been a “preliminary discussion” with Love’s agent about a contract extension.

Marcedes Lewis NFL career

Love was Lewis’ teammate for three seasons (2020, 2021 and 2022). Love was Aaron Rodgers’ backup during those years.

Lewis signed with the rival Bears last year and returned to Chicago in 2024 for his 19th season.

He played the first twelve years of his career with the Jaguars before joining the Packers in 2018. In five seasons, he played 81 regular season games for Green Bay.

Lewis played in all 17 games for the Bears in 2023, but was not used much in the passing game (four catches for 29 yards and zero touchdowns).

Packers 2024 training schedule

New contract or not, Love will begin his second training camp as starting quarterback later this month.

Sixteen practices are open to the public, with family night taking place on August 3 at 7 p.m. at Lambeau Field.
