“Happy 9th of July to all who celebrate,” said Swift, 34, before performing a mashup of the Speak Now Song “Last Kiss” and the Red Melody “Sad Beautiful Tragic” during the acoustic set of their Tuesday, July 9, Epoch tour Show in Zurich.
The singer’s decision to perform “Last Kiss” on July 9 did not surprise diehard Swifties, as she mentions the summer date in the ballad.
“I remember now the smell of the rain, fresh on the pavement, I ran off the plane / On that 9th of July, the beat of your heart / It jumps through your shirt, I can still feel your arms,” Swift sings in the second verse.
“Last Kiss” worked well as a mashup with “Sad Beautiful Tragic,” as both songs lovingly but wistfully recall romantic relationships that didn’t work out. The former tune seems to reference Swift’s 2008 romance with Joe Jonas.

Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas

“And I hope the sun is shining and it’s a beautiful day / And something reminds you that you wish you’d stayed / You can plan for a change in weather and time, but I never planned for you to change your mind,” Swift sings in the heartbreaking final verse.
Swift and Jonas have had their ups and downs over the years. More than a decade after Swift criticized the Jonas Brothers musician for breaking up with her over the phone during a 2008 performance, The Ellen DeGeneres Showshe expressed remorse for the “cheeky” comments.
“That was too much. I was 18,” Swift said Ellen DeGeneres when he stopped by the show again in May 2019. “Now we laugh about it. … That’s just teenage stuff.” Later that year, Jonas admitted it was “nice” to hear Swift walk back her previous remarks.
“It’s something I probably felt bad about when I was younger, but at the end of the day, I’ve gotten over it and I’m sure Taylor’s gotten over it and it feels good,” he said during a June 2019 appearance on Lorraine“We are all friends and everything is fine.”
Jonas continued to clear things up by changing the lyrics of the Jonas Brothers song “Much Better” during a performance in June 2022.
“Now I’m cool with superstars / and the teardrops on her guitar,” he sang instead of the original lyrics “done with superstars,” hinting at his restored relationship with the “Teardrops On My Guitar” singer. The Jonas Brothers performed the song with the new lyrics during their ongoing World Travel.
After reconciling with Jonas, Swift struck up a friendship with his now-estranged wife, Sophie TurnerShe has been a source of support for 28-year-old Turner since her split from Jonas in 2023.
Swift’s decision to perform “Last Kiss” on Tuesday may have had another dimension in addition to the connection to July 9. The Zurich performance was the 113th. Epoch tour Show, and “Last Kiss” is the 13th track on Speak Now.
“I just thought since (13) is my favorite number, I would just play some of my favorite songs for the acoustic part,” Swift told the audience before performing a mashup of Always‘s “Right Where You Left Me” and 1989‘s “All You Had to Do Was Stay” on guitar. She then switched to piano for the “Last Kiss” mashup.
Since the Epoch tour Swift has used the acoustic set, which kicks off in March 2023, to play “surprise songs” not on the main setlist. She had previously stated that she would not repeat surprise songs unless she made a mistake, but changed her own rule during a show in Melbourne in February.
“I’ve been thinking that I want to be as creative as possible with the acoustic set in the future. I don’t want to limit anything and just say, ‘Oh, if I’ve played a song before, I can’t play it again,'” the pop star told the crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. “I want to be able to play songs more than once if I feel like it, and I want to be able to make changes to songs.”
