A group of unions representing workers at Disneyland and its related amusement facilities have announced a vote to authorize a strike for Disneyland employees, according to a joint statement Tuesday.
The union groups claim that the vote on the authorization to strike is pursuing “unfair labor practices” by Disney and alleging “hundreds of labor violations” throughout the negotiations that prevented the unions from negotiating a fair contract for the cast members.
“Instead of working with us toward a fair contract, Disney has engaged in multiple instances in conduct that we believe constitute unfair labor practices, including unlawful disciplinary actions and intimidation, as well as surveillance of union members exercising their right to wear union badges at work. We know these actions are merely an attempt to prevent us from exercising our rights and to saddle us with a contract that maintains the status quo at Disney,” the union groups said.
Approximately 14,000 Disney Cast Members who work at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney and Disney hotels were represented by Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Local 83, Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West, Teamsters Local 495 and United Food and Commercial Workers Local 324.
The results of the strike authorization vote are expected to be announced by July 20, the joint statement said.
