At least 29 Palestinians were killed and dozens injured in an Israeli air strike on a camp for displaced people outside a school in the southern Gaza Strip, hospital officials said.

The Hamas-run Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip said the attack took place next to the gate of the Al-Awda school in the town of Abasan al-Kabira, east of the city of Khan Younis. The death toll was initially put at 25.

A video showed more than a dozen dead and seriously injured people, including several children, on the floor of a local hospital.

The Israeli military said it was currently investigating the reports. The reports came a week after it ordered civilians to evacuate Abasan al-Kabira and other areas east of Khan Younis, causing tens of thousands to flee.

A source at Nasser Hospital, where the injured were taken, said the death toll was expected to rise.

This is the fourth attack on or near schools housing displaced people in the last four days.

The Israeli military said it carried out the first three attacks because politicians, police and Hamas fighters were using them as bases.

On Saturday, 16 people were killed in an attack on a UN-run school in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, according to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry. Around 2,000 displaced people lived in the camp.

The following day, an attack on a church school in Gaza City killed a senior Hamas government official and three others, local sources said.

And on Monday evening, several people were reportedly injured in an attack on another UN school in Nuseirat.
