Ariana Grande speaks out critically about voice changes

Ariana Grande responds to recent comments about her voice and points out that this criticism is different for men and women.

In an interview for the Shut up, Evan In a podcast with Evan Ross Katz on July 9, Grande, 31, said her voice was changing, “which is totally normal, especially when you have a wide vocal range.”

“I just spent a lot of time playing a character every day,” Grande said of her role as Glinda in the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical Evil“(I’ve) been training my voice for a long time for different things before I left for London and before all this; muscle memory is a real thing.”

In June, a clip of the “Yes, And?” singer went viral after her voice was heard during an interview on PodCrushed Podcast with Penn Badgley, who recently appeared in the music video “Boy is Mine” with Grande.

Grande told Katz this week that she felt there was a double bar for transformative acting in roles.

“I mean, when you see male actors, of course people make jokes here and there, but looking back you always think, ‘Oh wow, how dedicated he was to his craft! What an incredible transformation! He’s a brilliant performer!'” she said. “But then it’s like, God forbid, I sneeze like Glinda or something, (then) I’m just crazy… it’s the weirdest thing.”

After fans initially teased the “We Can’t Be Friends” singer about the change last month, Grande first addressed her voice in a TikTok comment, saying the fluctuation was “due to habit (of speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health 🙂 🍵.”

“I intentionally change my vocal pitch (high/low) a lot depending on how much I’m singing 😭,” the star continued. “I’ve always done it that way, BYE.”

Grande continued to talk about vocal health on Shut up, Evan and said that maintaining it is “a full-time commitment and a lifestyle; it’s not something you can mess around with.”

“It’s your lifeline, it’s your tool and it’s something you can take out of a box and put back,” she continued. “It’s something that needs to be thought about 24/7.”
