Nearly half of the employees at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney could soon go on strike if workers approve a mass walkout while union negotiations continue over a new contract for 40% of the park’s 35,000 employees.
The Master Services Council, which represents 14,000 Disneyland employees from four unions, announced Tuesday, July 9, that a vote on authorizing a strike would be held next week.

The results of the strike authorization vote are expected to be announced after voting closes on July 20.
“We will not accept less than we deserve because we know how valuable Disney is to us,” said a joint statement from the Disneyland unions. “The theme parks’ profits come from our hard work making a trip to Disneyland a magical experience for guests.”
According to Disneyland, Disney negotiators and union representatives are scheduled to meet again on July 22.
“We respect and value our employees and recognize the important role they play in keeping our guests happy,” Disneyland said in a statement. “We remain committed to continuing discussions and reaching an agreement with the Master Services Council that focuses on the most important aspects of our current employees, helps us attract new employees, and positions Disneyland Resort for growth and the creation of additional jobs.”
The union coalition filed an unfair labor practice lawsuit in June on behalf of more than 500 workers who were disciplined for wearing union buttons featuring Mickey’s raised fist.
The union coalition, which has been negotiating a new contract with Disney since April, represents ride operators, store employees, janitors, candy makers, ticket sellers, parking attendants, streetcar drivers, costume designers and other cast members (as the employees are called in Disney jargon).
The contract with Disneyland expired on June 16. The contracts with Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney expire on September 30.
According to Disneyland officials, the Master Services Council refused to renew the contract after the Disneyland contract expired.
