Eddie Vedder: Pearl Jam almost had a health shock

“It was very unpleasant and frightening,” Vedder said of an unspecified illness that afflicted some members of the group.

Eddie Vedder says Pearl Jam had a “near-death experience” that forced them to cancel concerts in London and Berlin last week. In a fan-shot video during the group’s show in Barcelona over the weekend, Vedder spoke about a “terrifying” illness that had struck the group.

“All I can say is that last week I felt almost like a near-death experience,” Vedder said on stage. “It was very uncomfortable and it was scary.”

“It felt like bronchitis. That was something,” he added. “It felt like you couldn’t breathe, like you wouldn’t survive the night and would have to go to the hospital.”

Vedder appeared to become emotional as fans began clapping for him. Although Vedder did not say which members of the group were affected, he said it affected “some of us.”

“It just makes you realize how precious this life is,” Vedder reflected. “How lucky we are to have lived on a planet where we can travel around and play for incredible people like the people who are in this room tonight.”

“It was a moving experience. I won’t soon forget it,” he added. “And we won’t soon forget this evening.”
