HP ends toner subscription and stops production of e-Series printers

Problems with Instant Ink and HP+

HP’s Instant Ink and HP+ subscription services, launched in 2013 and 2020 respectively, require the printer to be constantly online to effectively automate the ink purchasing process. This has led to a number of customer complaints, which appear to have influenced the decision to remove mandatory HP+ sign-ups and Instant Ink entirely from LaserJet models.

Another perceived problem is that the two separate subscription services – which are different but still overlap – are confusing for customers.

Instant Ink is a hassle-free ink replacement service where the user chooses a usage plan based on the number of pages printed per month and pays a corresponding monthly fee. HP then sends toner to meet that need.

HP+ turns the user’s hardware into a “smart printer” with “intelligent, cloud-based connectivity and security.” It includes an Instant Ink subscription, as well as access to the enhanced HP Smart app and a two-year warranty.

“Since the introduction of HP+, our intelligent, connected printing system has been embraced by customers who value the convenience, extended warranty and solutions. We know that some customers in IT-managed office environments cannot meet the cloud connection requirements for HP+. To provide our customers with an exceptional printing experience in all office environments, we will no longer offer LaserJet series products with HP+.” -HP statement to Printer Channel

However, HP+ also requires its subscribers to use only genuine HP ink cartridges – another cause for concern for anyone who has signed up (whether voluntarily or by mandatory requirement) and would rather buy cheaper cartridges from third-party suppliers.
