Funding announced to address climate threat to indigenous lands in West Michigan

WAYLAND TOWNSHIP, Michigan – The Biden administration is once again making West Michigan the scene for a multi-million dollar spending announcement.

On Tuesday, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland is expected to announce new funding for Native American tribes whose homelands are threatened by climate change. She will be joined by White House Domestic Policy Council Director Neera Tanden.

Since taking office, President Biden has allocated more than $440 million to programs that help indigenous tribes build ecologically resilient programs. Previous funding has also been used to support relocation efforts if communities need to move due to environmental changes.

At their press conferences on Tuesday, Secretary Haaland and Tanden are expected to emphasize the administration’s commitment to addressing legacy issues, including a $4.7 billion program to close idle gas and oil wells.

The announcement comes a week after First Lady Dr. Jill Biden stopped near Middleville to promote a program that provides meals for children suffering from nutritional problems during the summer.

FOX 17 will broadcast the event live at 1 p.m.
