In an update from Deep Purple it says: “Thank you for the great reaction to the new song and video for ‘Lazy Sod’! We can’t wait until you can hear the full album =1 soon. Get an exclusive look behind the scenes! Be among the first to see the brand new photos from the video shoot for ‘Lazy Sod’. ‘Lazy Sod’ is the latest single from Deep Purple’s upcoming album =1.

When asked about the inspiration for the song, frontman Ian Gillan told Rocks magazine: “Recently, a young journalist asked me how many songs I’ve written in my life. I replied that the last time my assistant counted it, twenty years ago, it was over 500. I was feeling pretty successful until she pointed to Dolly Parton’s 5,000 songs and called me a lazy bum. I couldn’t help but agree with her and wrote the exchange down in my notebook.”

The enigmatic album title “=1” sums up the band’s philosophy of finding unity amidst complexity and promises an album that resonates deeply with their hard rock tradition spanning five decades.

In a recent interview about the sonic direction of their upcoming album, Simon McBride gave insight, saying: “The new album will reflect what the five of us create in the rehearsal room. Many of the songs, like ‘Portable Door’, were written in the early sessions and literally came together in 5 or 10 minutes. It was all so easy and natural.”

Ian Gillan emphasized the organic nature of Deep Purple’s songwriting, adding: “Throughout Deep Purple’s history, our best songs have always been those that were written in the shortest amount of time. We played what felt good and developed songs as we always have.”

The title =1 symbolizes the idea that in an increasingly complex world, everything ultimately boils down to a single, unified essence. Everything is one. Its full meaning will be revealed in the coming weeks, with the artwork also playing its part. Fans have been speculating since mysterious equations and depictions of multiverses appeared in London, Paris and Berlin in recent days.

With three consecutive No. 1 albums under their belt, Deep Purple is at the peak of their career. Now WHAT?! (2013), inFinite (2017) and Whoosh! (2020) have sold over a million copies worldwide, making Deep Purple one of the most successful rock bands currently active. The latest studio album Whoosh! reached number 1 in the album charts in 7 countries and landed in the top 10 in another 12 countries.

Deep Purple are taking the USA by storm this summer, shaking up arena walls with an explosive lineup of unforgettable hits from their rock repertoire spanning over half a century.
