Joe Egan dead | Singer of “Stuck In The Middle With You” dies at the age of 77

The band was best known for their hit single “Stuck in the Middle With You,” released in 1973.

The news was confirmed on the Facebook page of Rafferty, who died in 2011, with his daughter Martha sharing a series of pictures of Rafferty and Egan.

She wrote: “Very sad news that the other half of Stealers Wheel, Joe Egan, passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon surrounded by his loved ones.

“I will always remember him as a sweet and gentle soul. May he rest in peace.”

Egan and Rafferty met as teenagers in Paisley and worked together in a number of bands, including The Fifth Column and The Mavericks, before forming Stealers Wheel.

The band achieved chart success with songs such as “Late Again”, “Star” and “Everyone’s Agreed That Everything Will Turn Out Fine”.

Their biggest hit, however, was “Stuck in the Middle With You,” which reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and number 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The band split up in 1975, but “Stuck in the Middle With You” experienced a resurrection in 1992 when the band appeared in a key scene in Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs.”

Regarding the use of the song in the film, Tarantino previously told Rolling Stone: “It was one of those things where I thought (the song) would work really well, and (during) the auditions I told the actors I wanted them to do the… scene, and I’m going to use ‘Stuck in the Middle With You,’ but they could pick whatever they wanted, they didn’t have to use that song.”

He continued: “And a few people chose a different one, but almost everyone came up with ‘Stuck in the Middle With You’ and they said they tried to think of something else, but that’s it.

“The first time someone actually did the torture scene on this song, the guy didn’t even have a particularly good audition, but it was like watching the movie. I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is going to be great!'”

Egan also released two solo albums during his career: “Out of Nowhere” (1979) and “Map” (1981).
