Samsung: Despite employee strike, there will be no production interruptions

Seoul, South Korea:

South Korean technology giant Samsung said on Tuesday that there would be no production disruptions despite a three-day general strike by thousands of workers.

More than 5,000 members of the National Samsung Electronic Union walked off work on Monday in a long-running fight over wages and benefits, the organization said.

The union has more than 30,000 members – more than a fifth of the company’s total workforce.

“There was no interruption in production,” local media quoted Samsung as saying.

Park Seol, a senior union member, told AFP on Tuesday that production was affected.

“But more importantly, we want the company to understand that we’re not just trying to disrupt their production line. We want them to hear our voice and understand how desperate we are,” he said.

The union has been in negotiations with management since January, but the two sides have failed to resolve differences over benefits and a company offer to raise wages by 5.1 percent has been rejected.

Samsung Electronics said in a regulatory filing last week that its operating profit for the April-June period is expected to rise to 10.4 trillion won ($7.54 billion), up 1,452.2 percent from the year-ago figure of 670 billion won.

According to Samsung, sales are expected to rise by 23.3 percent to 74 trillion won.

Samsung Electronics is the world’s largest manufacturer of memory chips and contributes a significant share to the global production of high-end chips.
