Cardinals beat Nationals and take victory in four-game series

WASHINGTON, DC (KMIZ)

After setting a record four games over .500 in June, the Cardinals carried that momentum into July. St. Louis secured a four-game series sweep over Washington with a 6-0 victory in Monday’s finale, giving the Redbirds a 5-2 start to the month.

Miles Mikolas’ performance on the mound was key to Monday’s win. The right-hander threw 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing just six hits and striking out three batters. Andrew Kittredge and JoJo Romero replaced Mikolas and secured the shutout, combining to pitch the remaining 2.2 innings and allowing just two hits.

Paul Goldschmidt and Alec Burleson led the way at bat. Goldschmidt finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with his 12th home run of the season, while Burleson also turned in a 2-for-5 performance, including his 14th home run of the season and three RBIs. Brendan Donovan, Michael Siani and Nolan Gorman also had two hits each as part of an 11-hit performance by St. Louis.

Next, the Cardinals welcome the Royals to Busch Stadium for the first part of the I-70 Series in 2024. The first game of this short two-game series is scheduled for Tuesday, July 9 at 6:45 p.m.
