SS Badger resumes service on Lake Michigan on Tuesday

LUDINGTON, MI – The historic car ferry SS Badger will remain in port today due to an electrical problem that occurred during voyage Saturday, officials said.

The Badger is scheduled to return to service on Tuesday after spending two days in dock for repairs. The ship missed eight sailings between Saturday and Monday.

“Badger’s engineers are working around the clock to complete the repairs,” said Lake Michigan Carferry spokesman Thom Hawley. “We expect to be fully operational again tomorrow morning.”

Reservations staff is available to assist passengers with alternate travel arrangements, refunds and questions. Call 800-841-4243.

“LMC apologizes for the inconvenience to passengers and we are working with those affected by this incident,” Hawley said.

The ferry offers daily round-trip service between Ludington and Manitowoc, Wisconsin, providing a shortcut and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for travelers. The vessel makes the 60-mile journey across Lake Michigan in four hours. It can accommodate 600 passengers and 180 vehicles, including cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, RVs, campers, motorcycles, coaches, trucks, oversized loads, bikes, trailers and more.

The SS Badger is the last coal-fired passenger steamship in the United States. The ship was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2016. It was originally designed to transport railroad cars across Lake Michigan. The Badger is the last railroad car ferry still in operation on the Great Lakes.
