The Israel Defense Forces have released details of an attack on a school in the Nuseirat refugee camp that Gaza authorities said killed 16 people and injured at least 50.

The Israel Defense Forces said its intelligence services had discovered that the site allegedly served as “a hideout and operational infrastructure from which attacks against Israeli forces operating in the Gaza Strip were directed and carried out.”

“Numerous steps were taken prior to the attack to reduce the risk of harm to civilians, including the use of precise aerial surveillance and additional intelligence,” the Israeli army said, without disclosing what the steps were.

Israel is planning a long-term uprising against Hamas. It is assumed that Hamas will still exist in five years. However, the group will no longer be able to carry out an attack like the one on October 7.

“In five years, will you and I be talking about Hamas as a terrorist organization in Gaza? The answer is yes,” Daniel Hagari, spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces, told ABC News.

Hagari is the first Israeli politician to publicly admit that the uprising will be long and difficult, in stark contrast to the boastfulness of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who continues to vow a quick destruction of Hamas.

A senior Israeli government official told ABC News that the conflicts in Gaza and, to some extent, even against Hezbollah are “forever wars” that distract Israel from what he called Israel’s main enemy, Iran.

Israel has not yet commented on the attack, but ABC News has asked the Israeli military for a comment.
