Olly Alexander reveals Britain’s Eurovision song 2024

Olly Alexander’s entry for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest has been revealed.

The star of “Years & Years” was announced in December as the United Kingdom’s youngest representative at the musical spectacle; the 68th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest will take place in the Swedish city of Malmö in May.

“Dizzy” is the title of the track – you can watch the official music video below – and Alexander spoke about the many inspirations behind it.

“I wrote the song last summer with Danny L Harle. We started with the word ‘Dizzy’ because it just popped into my head and I liked it,” he said.

“I was thinking about funny things that can make you dizzy and I remember saying, ‘Dizzy from your kisses.’ So the song is about feeling such an intense wave of emotions for someone that they completely turn your world upside down.”

Alexander added: “Danny and I believe that music should transport you to a magical place and we wanted to describe that magical place in the song; a place with beautiful gardens, eternal flowers and time that spins endlessly in an ecstatic loop.

“We took the feeling of vertigo and incorporated it into the production, so there are lots of undulating arpeggios, lilting harmonies and counter rhythms in the background vocals.

“We were inspired by a lot of music we love from the 80s, like Erasure, Adamski and of course the Pet Shop Boys.”

The release of the single will be accompanied by a BBC One special at 10.40pm tonight (March 1): ‘Eurovision 2024: Graham Meets Olly’, where Eurovision favourite Graham Norton sits down with the pop star to talk about the upcoming show.

The semi-finals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 begin on Tuesday, May 7.
