Ultimately, the black ones Win the war in the Dance of Dragons in the Fire and Blood book.

However, this only happens after heavy losses have been suffered on both sides of the conflict and numerous key figures have been killed.

Following the deaths of King Aegon II Targaryen’s sons, vengeance is taken at Dragonstone when Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen is executed by Aegon’s dragon Sunfire in front of her fourth son, Prince Aegon Targaryen, who was captured but is now his heir.

After this victory and the recapture of King’s Landing from the rebels, the Green armies are defeated on the Kingsroad and it becomes clear that the Blacks will soon recapture the capital.

However, King Aegon II remains defiant, which leads to him being murdered by his men.

Rhaenyras and Daemon’s son Prince Aegon is released and eventually crowned King Aegon III Targaryen.

After the majority of living dragons die during the conflict, the new monarch is named Aegon the Dragonbane.

The Targaryens remain in power for two centuries, until Robert’s Rebellion, in which the mad King Aerys II Targaryen is overthrown by King Robert Baratheon.
