Playback singer Usha Uthup’s husband, Jani Chacko, has died at the age of 78 following a cardiac arrest

Indian pop sensation Usha Uthup is going through an extremely difficult phase as her husband Jani Chacko Uthup passed away in Kolkata on July 8, 2024. According to several reports, 78-year-old Jani suffered a cardiac arrest. According to news agency PTI, Jani felt discomfort while watching television at home.

The family immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. The cause of death is said to be cardiac arrest. Jani Chacko’s last rites will be held on July 9, 2024. Usha’s daughter Anjali posted a picture of Jani and wrote an emotional message that reads as follows:

“Appa… gone too soon… but with the style you lived… the most beautiful man in the world… we love you, a true gentleman and Lawrencian through and through and the finest tea taster.”

Before Jani, Usha was married to the late Ramu Iyer. Jani Chacko is Usha Uthup’s second husband. He was associated with the tea plantation industry. Jani and Usha first met in the 1970s at the popular nightclub Trincas. The couple has two children, Sunny and Anjali.

Usha Uthup’s professional life

Usha Uthup is one of the most famous faces in Indian pop and jazz music. Usha’s music career began in 1969 when she started singing in a Tamil-speaking Brahmin family in Chennai. While performing at the Oberoi Hotel in Delhi, Dev Anand visited the nightclub and discovered Usha.

Dev Anand offered her playback singing and she sang an English number and the title song of the film, Hare Rama Hare Krishna. With her first song in the Hindi film industry, Usha rose to fame and sang hit numbers like Holy Spirit, Shaan Se, Ramba, Koi Yahan Aha Nache Nache, Treasureand many more. Apart from Hindi films, Usha has also sung in South Indian films like Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. In 2024, Usha was also awarded the Padma Bhushan.

Earlier, in an interview with The Times Of India, Usha had talked about her first job and revealed that she was earning Rs 750 per month. She also called the experience of singing exciting and shared that it was her aunt who helped her get some gigs. Usha revealed that she was the highest paid singer at that time and was quoted as saying:

“I signed my professional contract with a hotel. And it was really amazing because at the end I got 750 rupees. Not for one show, but for a month. I stood in the club and sang, it was amazing and I was the highest paid singer at that time, I mean as a nightclub singer. So the thrill of earning that money was very special.”
