Remnants of Hurricane Beryl could bring heavy rains to West Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (WOOD) — Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas early Monday morning, and heavy rains moved into Michigan by Tuesday evening.

Landing of Hurricane Beryl

The storm made landfall in Matagorda about 85 miles southwest of Houston as a Category 1 hurricane with wind gusts over 90 mph. Storm surge and torrential rain contributed to the storm’s damage.

Beryl continues to weaken as it moves north, with upper-level winds directing the storm directly through Michigan beginning Tuesday evening. No severe weather is expected as the storm moves through, but heavy rain is possible in some areas.

Heavy rains are possible in Michigan due to beryl remnants

The exact path of the system is still uncertain, but most of West Michigan is expected to receive 1 to 3 inches of rainfall from the depression. The peak could be up to 4 inches in places, which could lead to localized flooding. Areas south of I-94 and east of 131 are expected to see the highest rainfall amounts.

A weather forecast for the region south of I-96 provided by the National Weather Service indicates that the chance of heavy precipitation (level 1 of 4) is low.

Model results for Grand Rapids range from 0.50 to 1.50 inches, with a gradation of larger accumulations observed toward the south.
