Turkish voice actors warn of “slow integration” of AI

Since the Turkish language is difficult to pronounce due to its unique accent, it may take some time for artificial intelligence to be fully integrated into the Turkish dubbing and voiceover industry, Turkish voice artists told local media.

AI, which excels in content production from video creation to audio synthesis, has sparked ongoing debates abroad about its use in film and dubbing.

The organization United Voice Artists is working worldwide on measures to protect voice artists from the advance of artificial intelligence.

In Turkey, dubbing and voiceover are still of great importance, both artistically and commercially. However, Turkish dubbing artists stressed that the industry could become obsolete domestically.

“Turkish words can take on different meanings depending on the intonation. Perfect AI dubbing for Turkish is a big challenge,” says Arda Kavaklıoğlu, voice actress and performer.

For an AI to speak a language flawlessly and use that language in artistic works, extensive training and significant investment are required. “I doubt that there will be as much investment in Turkish as in English, French or Spanish, because the market there is bigger,” he added.

Selay Taşdöğen, who lent her voice in Turkish to a navigation application, noted that despite the years, the application still has problems with certain pronunciations.

“For example, if you listen to Alisa on Yandex, you will notice that over time it still hasn’t learned some words properly. This probably requires conversational interaction, which is missing, which hinders proper learning.”

“Will we be unemployed? Will we lose our livelihoods? In the long run, yes. My answer is definitely yes. We are already seeing AI taking over many sectors,” she claimed.

To prevent the dubbing industry from succumbing to AI, Turkish dubbing artists must meet two crucial criteria. First, prior consent of an artist’s voice is essential if it is to be used by AI. Every project must be carried out with prior consent and may only be used for the project.

Secondly, compliance with the protocol on voice-over pricing drawn up in collaboration with the Actors’ Union and the Association of Voice-Over Studios is essential.
