Taylor Fritz explains what Alexander Zverev said about his team after his epic match

Taylor Fritz lost the first two sets of his Wimbledon fourth-round match against No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev on Monday before pulling off an incredible five-set victory, 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. After the match, the two players met at the net to shake hands and exchange pleasantries, but many thought Zverev had more to say than just congratulations. Particularly about the way Fritz’s team operated in his box.

In his interview immediately after the match on Centre Court, Fritz was asked what was discussed between the two and his answer was vague. “Everything is fine,” Fritz said. “Obviously, it felt like he wasn’t moving so well with his knee in the fifth set, so I just wished him the best, you know?”

While Fritz behaved diplomatically on Centre Court, things got a bit heated on social media when Zverev confirmed in a post-match interview that he had a problem with the behavior of the people in Fritz’s box.

Meanwhile, a video captioned “When your man wins the girls” with some emojis was posted on the Instagram account of Morgan Riddle, Fritz’s influencer girlfriend. The video was eventually removed.

Fritz then sat down for an interview with The Tennis Channel. Host Steve Weissman began with the blunt question: “What was this about?”

“I think he was a little upset that my teammates cheered me on when he was injured, but he said it has nothing to do with you. You’re fine. Whatever, it’s all good.”

Fritz then added, “I didn’t wish him a flight home.” This elicited a giggle from Weissman and Martina Navratilova.

Fritz will compete in his second consecutive Wimbledon quarterfinal on Wednesday, and whether his opponent likes it or not, his entire team will be there.
