Tornado from last week’s storm confirmed in Michigan’s Thumb

A severe thunderstorm last Friday, July 5, created a tornado at the top of the Michigan State Capitol.

The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-0 tornado – the weakest tornado category – in Huron Township in Huron County. Huron Township is located in the far northeast of Huron County in Michigan’s Thumb Borough. Huron Township is located between Port Hope and Grindstone City on the shores of Lake Huron.

The EF-0 rating is the lowest wind speed rating for a tornado. The Friday afternoon tornado had estimated peak wind speeds of about 75 mph.

As with most weak tornadoes, the path was short and the width was narrow. The tornado was three-tenths of a mile above the ground. The tornado had a maximum width of 75 feet.

No injuries were reported in this tornado.

The tornado didn’t last long either, but it was still a tornado. The tornado lasted two minutes, started a mile northwest of Redman, Michigan, and dissipated a mile north of there. The entire tornado only lasted from 4:38 p.m. to 4:40 p.m.

The National Weather Service survey summary states: “On the evening of July 5, 2024, a brief, weak tornado developed near Huron Township. The tornado developed north of Kinde Road, along the north edge of a tree line. The tornado then continued to move east, crossing Huron City Road, and dissipated in a nearby field. Damage caused by the tornado was primarily limited to trees and nearby crops.”

It was the second tornado associated with Friday’s storm system. The other, rated slightly stronger as an EF-1, touched down in Clare County.
