Cañado opens the Girls’ European Team Championship on Tuesday

SWEDEN – Newcomer to women’s golf at Duke Anna Cañado Espinal will take to the course again this week when she takes part in the 2024 European Girls’ Team Championship, which will be held from 9 to 13 July at Göteborgs Golf Klubb in Sweden.

Cañado will represent her home country Spain and will open the action on Tuesday at 8:47 a.m. local time.

The championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play qualifying before moving on to match play from July 11 to 13. Each team of six golfers will play two individual rounds of stroke play on days one and two, with five of each team’s six scores counting towards the total stroke play qualifying points.

The top eight teams from the stroke play rounds qualify for the match play class “Flight A” where medals are at stake. The next eight teams compete in Flight B and (if applicable) the remaining teams in Flight C.

In the match play groups, teams are seeded based on their qualifying position (1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, etc.). The winning teams advance in their groups, while the losing teams and anyone with no chance of a medal continue to play a shortened format with a foursome match and four singles matches against other “inferior” teams to determine the final position.

To win the title, a team must qualify for Flight A (top 8 in stroke play qualifying) and then win all three matches. Teams that finish second and third will receive silver and bronze medals.

Last year, Cañado helped her Spanish team win the championship in France.
