Paul George begins ‘new journey’ with Sixers, says it was always ‘brotherly love’ with Allen Iverson – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Paul George is settling in as a Sixer.

He has already made his way to the team’s training complex in Camden, New Jersey, and posed with his new number 8 jersey.

George also gave an interview on an airport runway with John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

“Joel Embiid is a dominant force – one of the best, if not the best big in the league,” George told Clark when asked why the Sixers would be the best fit for him. “He’s going to be absolutely fun to work with. And Tyrese Maxey is one of the hottest young stars in the NBA. I’ve loved his game from afar and I’m excited to be alongside him.”

“And then what (Sixers head coach) Nick Nurse has done with this Philly group, what he’s accomplished in his career. He’s a winner and I believed in him. I’m excited about this new journey and being a Sixer.”

Once the games begin, George is cheered on by Allen Iverson on the sidelines at the Wells Fargo Center.

After wearing an Iverson shirt at his free agent meeting with the Sixers, he will surely appreciate this.

“I was just a huge fan of AI,” George said. “Being a kid from Southern California and watching his battles with the Lakers against (Kobe Bryant), I obviously developed a ton of respect for AI back then and he’s one of my favorite players to watch as a kid. … I had the opportunity to meet him a couple of times.”

“There was always love between the two of us – brotherly love. That was the bond that bound us together; just the admiration for what he did, and there is no (better) person to give the honor of having gone through that process than Al.”

When George finally gets it all figured out, he can look up and see Iverson’s retired No. 3 sharing the floor with Maxey and Embiid.

“We all have the same goal,” he said, “and that is to win and be the last team standing. It’s great when everyone pulls together.”
