Baysox lose to the Flying Squirrels in the series finale in 12 innings

BOWIE, Maryland. – The Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, lost to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, in 12 innings on Saturday night at the Diamond with a final score of 4:3.

Bowie (7-5, 39-41) faced Richmond’s starting left-hander John Michael Bertrand, who had thrown 20 scoreless innings before the game and allowed just three hits in three starts against the Baysox. TT Bowens And Jude Fabian opened the game with two consecutive singles and Bowens later scored on a wild pitch from third base to open the scoring.

Bertrand finally settled down after allowing five hits in the first two innings. The left-hander pitched five innings, allowing just one run on six hits, one walk and five strikeouts, with no decisions. At one point, he struck out 10 Baysox batters in a row.

Right-handed player as starting player Ryan Long started for Bowie. The 24-year-old threw three scoreless innings to start the evening, but allowed a two-run homer by Andy Thomas in the fourth inning. Long finished the evening with 3.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits, three strikeouts and no walks.

After Bowie went hitless from the second to the eighth inning, he got his final strike in the ninth inning with the tying run on second base. Collin Burns came through and hit a single into center field to score John Rhodes and equalize the game at 2:2.

Neither team scored a goal in the 10thwhich takes the game into 11th.th. With runners on first and third base and one out, Anthony Servideo hit an RBI single to center to give Bowie a 3-2 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the 11th.th and the equalizing run for Richmond (4-8, 38-43) by Victor Bericoto on third base, right-hander Lincoln Henzman (L, 1-2) threw a wild pitch that eluded the catcher Samuel Basallo. Basallo started the tag when Bericoto rushed to the plate, but the ball bounced out of his hand, bringing the tying point and tying the game at 3-3.

In the top of the 12thBowie could not take the lead because there were runners on second and first base and no one out. In the bottom of the 12ththTurner Hill hit an RBI double from Henzman into the gap between right and center field to bring home Jimmy Glowenke from second base and secure the win for the Flying Squirrels.

Richmond right-hander Eric Silva (W, 4-1) took the win after 1.1 scoreless innings in the 11th.th and 12th.

The Baysox left 14 men on base, one less than their season high, and struck out 2 of 19 runners in scoring position in a game that lasted 3 hours and 42 minutes, making it the longest game of the season.

Bowie will have the next two days off before returning to action on Tuesday, July 9, for a six-game road series against the Altoona Curve, the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. First pitch for Tuesday is scheduled for 6 p.m. at People’s Natural Gas Field.

The Baysox’s next home game begins Friday, July 19, against the Hartford Yard Goats, the Colorado Rockies’ Double-A affiliate team, a three-game series from July 19-21. Friday is Baysox Summer Games Night with post-game fireworks and a mother-son night with the purchase of a special ticket package. Saturday is Island Luau Night, where the first 750 fans ages 13 and older will receive a free Hawaiian shirt, followed by post-game fireworks. Sunday is Family Fun Day and Hero’s Day with a kid’s hero cape as a gift for the first 500 fans ages 3-12.
