One Reddit user complained that the Famous Bowl only included five chicken nuggets, wondering if that was standard practice or a way to stretch the product even further. It’s also worth noting that KFC has replaced the popular popcorn chicken that used to be in the bowl with chicken nuggets, which are slightly larger.

Regardless of why changes were made, several KFC employees have confirmed that they were instructed by management to only put five chicken nuggets in each Famous Bowl. Of course, some locations are more generous with the nugget count depending on management, but the next time you order this KFC classic, keep in mind that employees’ hands may be tied.

The nuggets in the famous KFC bowl might be limited by portion size

While it’s easy to blame the small number of chicken nuggets at Famous Bowl on corporate austerity, the problem could also very well be due to portion size. The new chicken nuggets are admittedly a bit larger than the chain’s discontinued Popcorn Chicken. So while Famous Bowl used to feature a full layer of chicken, a product change could mean a change in quantity.

It’s difficult to determine exactly how many nuggets are in a serving. However, when comparing the nutritional information of Popcorn Chicken to that of the restaurant’s chicken nuggets, it appears that a small serving of Popcorn Chicken and a five-piece serving of chicken nuggets are relatively close in terms of calorie count. If the Famous Bowl did indeed contain the equivalent of a small serving of Popcorn Chicken, then the new version, which uses five of KFC’s chicken nuggets, still contains roughly the same amount of chicken.
