Glitter Magazine | Chappell Roan plays new, unreleased song “The Subway”

Chappell Roan dresses up as the Statue of Liberty to perform an unreleased song called “The Subway” at the Governors Ball in New York on June 9.

Roan explains: “I’m not sure if or when it’s coming out, but I think it’s just fun to sing… It kind of feels like Casual’s cousin to me.” The song “Casual” comes from the pop star’s debut album, The rise and fall of a Midwestern princesswhich describes a relationship that is not balanced.

However, “The Subway,” a mid-tempo ballad, has a darker mood, with lyrics like, “It’s just another day, and it ain’t over til it’s over, it’s never over.” The singer teased this new song by changing her profile picture to the famous Subway logo.

As fans know, Roan loves a good theme. The pop star emerged as the Statue of Liberty from a half-eaten apple before changing into a classic New York taxi outfit to pay homage to the city. The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer performed ten tracks, including songs like “Femininomenon,” “Naked in Manhattan,” “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” and “HOT TO GO!”

During her performance, the “Casual” singer made a statement quoting the poem engraved on the Statue of Liberty: “I dress up as the greatest queen of them all, but in case you’ve forgotten what’s engraved on my pretty little toes: ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your downtrodden masses yearning to breathe free.’ That means freedom and trans rights. That means freedom and women’s rights, and it especially means freedom for all oppressed people in the occupied territories.”

Towards the end of her performance, Roan revealed that she had turned down the White House when it asked her to perform at their Pride event. The singer said: “In response to the White House asking me to perform at Pride, we want freedom, justice and independence for all. If you do that, I will come.”

Although her reaction at the White House received mixed reactions, the singer reiterated her statement: “I said what I meant, and I meant what I said on stage.”

Fans really enjoyed Roan’s performance at Gov Ball, and even pointed out some references she made to topics other than the Big Apple.

However, fans weren’t the only ones who noticed the pop star’s appearance. Bratz, the famous doll company, made a doll to celebrate Roan’s Statue of Liberty costume. The pop star responded, “AHHH.”
