Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors of all time. He has written countless books, short stories, novellas, and more. His work has been adapted more often than that of any other living author, and it’s easy to see why. He has a great imagination and a talent for storytelling. However, not all of King’s literary works work at full speed. There is one title in particular that the author looks back on and cringes. I’m talking about the 1987 tome The TommyKnockers.

In 2014, the author met with Rolling Stone to talk about his illustrious career. When the conversation turned to his struggle with cocaine, the medium asked if his addiction had affected his literary production. The author’s answer was surprisingly candid.

“Yes, that’s true. I mean, The TommyKnockers is a terrible book,” King began. “It was the last thing I wrote before I pulled myself together. And I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately and saying to myself that there really is a good book in here, despite all the fake energy that cocaine releases, and that I should take another look at it. The book is about 700 pages long, and I think there’s probably a good 350-page novel in there.”

There you have it. Stephen King recognizes The Tommyknockers is perhaps not his best work. Unsurprisingly, the miniseries adaptation was not particularly well received either, with only a 30% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. If you’re curious, you can watch the trailer in the player below.

The synopsis according to Wikipedia is: While walking through the woods near the small town of Haven, Maine, Roberta “Bobbi” Anderson, an author of Wild West-themed novels, comes across a metal object that turns out to be the offshoot of a long-buried alien spaceship.

While there is no official way to stream or download The Tommyknockers in North America, there is a good quality version available on YouTube. Check it out at your own discretion.
