Salsa Club organizes a second public dance after its first success in spring

After successfully establishing itself in the community with its first dance event in April, the Moose Jaw Salsa Club is now looking to host its second official dance on Saturday, July 13th.

After successfully establishing itself in the community with its first dance event on April 6, the Moose Jaw Salsa Club now wants to build on this success by hosting its second dance event of the year.

The second Salsa Club dance will take place on Saturday, July 13th, at Against the Grain Studios. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The dance event is for guests aged 16 and over and lasts until 9 p.m.

“This time we have many more surprises for our guests,” announces Marcela Borrero Cruz, founder of the Moose Jaw Salsa Club.

“Here you can dance salsa, interact with people from other cultures and enjoy life,” she said. “You also have the opportunity to see some performances full of energy and Latin American flair.”

The Moose Jaw Salsa Club is organized by Cruz and her husband Danilo Bravo. The couple previously lived in Colombia and, as new members of the community, hope to share and enjoy their cultural background with anyone interested in their new home.

Now that the club is well established, the couple hope to make it even more popular by gradually increasing its momentum.

The first step in this process was the first public dance event in April, which Cruz described as a “great success.”

“It was more than I expected,” she said. “We’ve had good feedback and hope people will continue to be encouraged to participate.”

Cruz is now hoping for additional interest in the upcoming second dance.

“I hope to see new faces (and) … meet more people who are encouraged to join in and have a fun and different evening,” she said. “It’s a place to laugh, to be distracted and most of all to learn from others and dance a lot.”

Cruz said the reception from the community has been “friendly and kind,” adding that Moose Jaw has been generous in its response. The couple now hopes to give back by sharing something they care about with others.

“Our goal will always be to promote dance – not just as entertainment, but to give people something emotional and physical,” she said. “It’s a lifelong learning process.”

In addition to upcoming dance events, the club also offers several ongoing classes throughout the year.

On July 21 and 28, the club will host a summer dance camp from 10:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. with classes in tap, ballet, hip-hop, jazz, musical, highland and salsa. On Saturday, August 3, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., the club’s next class will be an introduction to bachata. Cruz said she is also considering additional classes in belly dancing and Latin rhythms later in the year.

Cruz described the club as a welcoming cultural space with a primarily educational objective.

“It’s a safe environment where (guests) can laugh, dance and meet people,” she said. “Let’s continue to grow together and build (the) community.”

Admission is $10 per person and includes a drink and a 5% discount on the club’s next Bachata dance class. Tickets are limited, so anyone interested is advised to register early.
