Capitals promote Chris Patrick to GM; Brian MacLellan remains President of Hockey Operations

The Washington Capitals have promoted Chris Patrick to senior vice president and general manager, the club announced Monday. Brian MacLellan, who served as general manager for the past 10 seasons, will remain president of hockey operations.

“We are very pleased to announce Chris’ promotion to General Manager,” said Ted Leonsis, Chairman and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, in a press release. “Chris is a dedicated and hard-working executive who is well prepared for this next step in his career. His vision, extensive experience, hockey sense and player evaluation make him the perfect leader to lead our team forward. We are confident he will succeed in this new role.”

Patrick, 48, becomes the seventh general manager in franchise history and begins his 17th season with the Capitals. He served as associate general manager in 2023-24 and worked closely with MacLellan, having held various positions in the organization since 2008-09.

MacLellan, 65, is entering his 24th season with the Capitals. During his tenure as GM, the Capitals won a Stanley Cup, two Presidents’ Trophies and five consecutive Metropolitan Division titles from 2015-16 to 2019-20. Washington has a 449-244-88 record under MacLellan and the third-most wins in the league during that span. MacLellan will serve as president of hockey ops in 2023.

The Capitals finished the 2023-24 season fourth in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 40-31-11. They were swept in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the President Trophy winners New York Rangers.
