Ryan Day says Michigan’s success didn’t bring any additional motivation

FOX College Football analyst Joel Klatt recently sat down with Ohio State head coach Ryan Day to discuss a variety of topics, including the rivalry with Michigan. Day, who has an impressive 56-8 overall record during his time in Columbus, has struggled to win the most important game on Ohio State’s schedule. As for Michigan, Day is just 1-3 against the Wolverines.

To make matters worse for Day, Michigan’s current three-game winning streak against Ohio State also includes three consecutive Big Ten championships, three consecutive trips to the College Football Playoff and a national championship to conclude the 2023 season. It can’t be easy to watch your biggest rival win at the highest level (Michigan fans know this better than anyone), but Day says Michigan’s success in Columbus hasn’t provided any additional motivation.

“I don’t think you’re more or less motivated any year,” Day said. “I think every year every team is a little different. But to say those games didn’t hurt… I mean, of course they did. It’s bad weeks in Columbus when you don’t win that game. So whether it’s the guys who decided to come back or whether it’s making strong decisions in those moments, I can say you have to figure out what you need to change to win the game. That’s the key, and that’s what we did.”

Yeah, I don’t buy that. The harsh reality for Day is that he has a huge Michigan problem right now, and I think the lack of success against Michigan is a huge offseason incentive for him.

Ohio State has been very open about the amount of money they spend on the roster through NIL initiatives, and those efforts have helped Day build a roster that is one of the best in the nation… on paper. In Columbus, you expect to beat Michigan every year, but this year it feels more like a demand than an expectation. While Day’s overall record is impressive, the Columbus fan base is growing increasingly restless with the lack of success against the Wolverines and the fourth straight loss to Michigan. could would be enough to cost Day his job.
