Watch Taylor Swift perform “Sweeter Than Fiction” live

Taylor Swift made her live debut performing “Sweeter Than Fiction” in Amsterdam and sang “Mary’s Song” for the first time since 2008. Check out footage of the moments below.

It happened as the pop star took the stage for the last of her three nights at the Dutch Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.

“I can’t believe it, but I haven’t played this song on the ‘Eras Tour’ yet, so it’s fun,” she said before launching into ‘Sweeter Than Fiction’ in the ‘Surprise Song’ section of her 45-song setlist (Saturday, July 6).

The song was written by Swift and produced by her longtime friend, collaborator and producer Jack Antonoff in 2013. It was written while the singer was on tour in support of her album “Red” and was composed as part of the soundtrack to the film “The 4000”. A chancewhich is about opera singers and Britain’s Got Talent Winner Paul Potts.

The song was the first of two songs played during the surprise section, and was soon followed by Swift’s first performance of “Mary’s Song” in 16 years.

“You get bonus points if you know the words to this song that I’m about to sing, because it’s from my first album,” the pop star told the crowd as she put down her acoustic guitar and walked over to a piano. “I’ve never played it on the ‘Eras Tour’, so bonus points for you if you know the words to this song.”

It was the first time she performed the song since 2008, and she performed it as a mashup of “So High School” and “Everything Has Changed.”

She also subtly remixed the lyrics towards the end to allude to her relationship with Travis Kelce.”I’ll be 87, you’ll be 89 / I’ll still look at you like the stars that shine / In heaven, oh my God,“ she sang, with the 87 referring to the Kansas City Chiefs player’s jersey number and the 89 being a nod to her birth year and the 2014 album.

The night before – during the second of her three shows in Amsterdam – Swift also surprised her audience by playing “imgonnagetyouback” live for the first time on the “Eras Tour”.

The song, from Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, appeared in a medley of songs during the performance that also included the song “Dress” from Reputation. Swift then followed with “You Are In Love” from 1989, which segued into “Cowboy Like Me” from Evermore.

In other Taylor Swift news, songwriting legend Patti Smith referenced her name from Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” onstage in Dublin last month.

The New York punk icon was playing at the city’s Vicar Street venue on June 28 when she alluded to her connection to the title track of one of the year’s most successful records.

In the song in question, which was released in April, Swift makes specific references to Smith, but also to Welsh poet Dylan Thomas and the legendary bohemian hotspot, the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan.

I laughed in your face and said, “You’re not Dylan Thomas, I’m not Patti Smith / This isn’t the Chelsea Hotel / We’re modern-day idiots‘” she sings, which is widely seen as a reference to her short-lived relationship with Matty Healy of The 1975.

Then this week, Smith came full circle, as seen in fan-shot footage from the Dublin show. Smith said, “Well, I have a confession to make. I’m not Dylan Thomas, but I AM Patti Smith!”, earning her huge cheers from the crowd.

Shortly after the song came out, Smith responded with a social media post in which she is seen reading a book of Thomas’s poetry. “I would like to say that I am moved to be mentioned in the company of the great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Thank you Taylor,” she wrote.
