Biden to campaign in Detroit after pledging to stay in the race • Michigan Advance

President Joe Biden will campaign in Detroit on Friday. It will be his first visit to Michigan, despite calls from some Democrats and political observers to drop out of the race. The Biden campaign has not released details about the event.

The president’s performance in the first debate against presumptive GOP nominee and former President Donald Trump last month was widely criticized, but Biden has repeatedly said he will not drop out of the race. He campaigned in Pennsylvania over the weekend and held a rally in Wisconsin on Friday.

Both presidential candidates are aggressively targeting Michigan this year because the location was crucial to Trump’s victory in 2016 and Biden’s victory in 2020.

Biden has already visited Michigan three times this year. He most recently traveled to the state in May, when he chaired the NAACP’s annual dinner in Detroit. California Governor Gavin Newsom campaigned for Biden in western Michigan on Thursday. First Lady Jill Biden attended several events in western and northern Michigan on Wednesday.

Trump last campaigned in Michigan in June, where he held an event at a Detroit church and spoke at the Turning Point Action conference. This was his time back in the state since he was convicted of 34 felonies in a hush money scandal related to the 2016 election.
