MONACO, July 8, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Addressing hydrogen innovations in the shipping and yachting industries is the goal of the annual Hydrogen Round Table (this year the 5th edition), organized by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, Monaco Energy Transition and YCM and held during the Energy Boat Challenge at the Yacht Club de Monaco.

Among the protagonists of the day is SBM Offshore. “At SBM Offshore, we strongly believe that investments are fundamental to enable a safe energy transition, in the spirit of competition and in view of the opportunities we create for the engineers of tomorrow. Hydrogen is one of the most important technologies currently on the table, so we see it as part of the equation. In this regard, we have developed a pontoon that produces hydrogen to refuel the boats this year. We also presented a commercial solution that we are evaluating in the hydrogen field, particularly in the ammonia sector, namely terminals for ammonia unloading. Looking to the future, in the coming years we will also focus on testing FPSOs for ammonia production,” said Francesco Prazzo, Managing Director of SBM Offshore. As for infrastructure, NatPower H announced the completion of the first hydrogen refueling during the nautical event. The green hydrogen refueling took place in the early hours of the morning in the port of Fontvieille (Monaco), with the support and technical and technological know-how of Linde Gas. “We are here because this event is becoming a reference in the global hydrogen evolution market. In addition, three boats are here, namely Madblue P-01, Inocel-Poseidon and Cambridge University Riviera Racing, which were here to show their designs, but in the morning we refueled them with hydrogen in agreement with the local port authority, so they are all now available for tests with hydrogen on board,” said Andrea Minerdo, CEO of NatPower H. “A year ago we decided to start this project and it is the first hydrogen refueling station infrastructure for the sports yacht market,” he recalled. As hydrogen is taking up more and more space, one of the many questions is: “Fuel cell or combustion engine? What does the future hold?” “Hydrogen is a decarbonization issue and can have different types of applications. “In the shipping sector, the big problem is that we lack hydrogen and the infrastructure is not yet ready. This is the main reason that is holding back the market. However, the technology is emerging and there are some very efficient solutions such as fuel cells that are ready and very efficient for intensive use, as well as H2ICE engines as a solution to accelerate the ecosystem,” added Jules Billiet, CEO of Inocel.
