New study shows: Generation Z hates “unnecessary” sex scenes in films and series

Generation Z has a free-spirited lifestyle and always has a few daring tricks up their sleeve. They have open conversations about sex and relationships and are redefining boundaries with modern relationship styles like situationships. These young adults are also avid binge-watchers and stay home to binge their favorite shows.

But a new American study brings to light an interesting finding that broadens our understanding of this often misunderstood generation. Overly explicit scenes in movies and TV shows instantly put Generation Z off. Contrary to popular belief, and despite popular Gen Z slang like “Netflix and chill,” these young adults endure on-screen cravings with empty, expressionless feelings, feeling “drenched” rather than “awakened.” Talker Research surveyed 2,000 young American adults.

Pointless for the plot

Sex and nudity that advance the plot make sense and provide viewers with a modicum of tolerability. Some believe they are necessary to add depth to characters. However, inhibitions for explicit scenes are lowered when they exist without motive. Meaningless sex scenes alienate the viewer from the plot, become repetitive, and are perceived as “forced.” This discomfort causes viewers to turn off the film when they see incessant intimate scenes. And Gen Z, surprisingly, is more annoyed than any other generation and may even look away when watching a film. The entertainment industry has intensified intimate scenes to the point that they feel downright voyeuristic. Most Gen Z respondents in the survey believe that sex scenes do not enrich the story or the viewer’s enjoyment.

Women skip school more often

The study concluded that when women repeatedly see sex scenes, they either skip the film or turn it off, while men are less affected. This difference stems from the assumption that men benefit from visual stimuli, while women are more imaginative.

Moderation is key

Don’t mistake Gen Z for prudish people. They don’t cringe or cover their ears when the word ‘sex’ is mentioned. Moderation is ingrained in Gen Z’s lifestyle, whether it’s through frugality or opting for sustainable paper straws. Their social consciousness creates similar expectations when portrayed on screen too. Moderation in explicit scenes is needed when they only serve to advance the plot and not for sensationalism. Often, gratuitous sex scenes are added to attract young audiences and increase ratings. It’s an easy shortcut to profit and social media stardom. The irony is that no one really understands Gen Z.
