1974: Teenager Chris Evert wins Wimbledon – Post Bulletin

1999 – 25 years ago

  • The Mayo Clinic has begun providing health articles to America Online, the nation’s largest Internet service provider.
  • Goodhue County Officer Barb Johnson was named National Correctional Officer of the Year by the American Jail Association in 1999. Johnson’s work on the New County Jail’s transition team in 1998 saved $221,000 from the construction budget.

1974 – 50 years ago

  • The World Football League begins operations with a 20-game regular season schedule. (The WFL played only one season in 1974 and part of the 1975 season before disbanding.)
  • The maximum interest rate for government-insured mortgages will be increased to 9 percent.
  • Teenager Chris Evert won the women’s singles title at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships by defeating Russian Olga Morozova 6-0, 6-4.

1949 – 75 years ago

  • The city of Austin will launch an attack on the mosquitoes by spraying 3,500 gallons of DDT.
  • Next week there will be a housewives’ camp in Harmony. Registration costs 35 cents. The recipe exchange is all-encompassing and includes recipes from Norway, Scotland, France and England.

1924 – 100 years ago

  • The Rochester Oil Company plans to build a new oil/gas station at the north end of the city.
  • The assistant fire marshal has identified several fire hazards in the current Rochester Central School building. The school board has voted to build a new building to replace the current Central School.
  • Two young men from Rochester were sentenced to five years in the St. Cloud Reformatory for vandalizing a house and stealing a car.
