The Paisley Walk of Fame was unveiled to honour the famous faces that call the city home

A Walk of Fame has been unveiled in Paisley to honour the stars from the worlds of music, art, television, film and sport who call the city home.

Ten Hollywood Boulevard-style paving stones were laid around the city’s streets, depicting the city’s popularly elected sons and daughters.

The first ten stars to be honoured as part of the project included playwright John Byrne, singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty and actors David Tennant and Gerard Butler. Paolo Nutini’s star was unveiled outside his parents’ fish and chip shop in New Street.

Boxing legend Norrie Sweeney and actor Fulton Mackay will soon be unveiled as part of the brand new walkway.

David Tennant said: “I am honoured to be inducted into the Buddie Walk of Fame and thank everyone who voted for me.

“I am proud to have attended Paisley Grammar and am delighted to have my star unveiled outside my old school. I have some great memories of my time at the Grammar and will make a point of visiting this place next time I am in town.”

The project has been driven by Paisley First, Paisley’s Business Improvement District, which is fully funded by local town centre businesses and has support from Renfrewshire Council’s Culture, Heritage and Events Fund (CHEF).

Elaine Templeton, Chair of Paisley First, commented: “We were inundated with nominations for the Buddie Walk of Fame but the people of Paisley made it clear that these were the favourites to be celebrated in this first phase.

“We look forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world to follow the trail and enjoy all that our city has to offer.

“The Buddie Walk of Fame is truly the perfect way to celebrate the achievements of Buddies around the world and inspire a younger generation to achieve their dreams.”

It is hoped that future phases of the Buddies Walk of Fame will be realized.

The 10 stones along the way were created by CED Stone Scotland and their partner Scribble Stone and subsequently laid free of charge by John McGeady Limited, whose managing director Tom Crumlish is a Paisley Buddie.

Mark Kenny, Depot Manager at CED Stone Scotland, said: “CED Stone Scotland is used to tackling unusual projects that require our knowledge and expertise in natural stone and landscaping products, so when we heard about the Buddie Walk of Fame project, being from Paisley myself, I knew I had to do my utmost to make this project a reality.

“The Buddie Walk of Fame is a fantastic idea as there are so many people from Paisley, past and present, who deserve recognition for what they have done for the town.

“This project fits well within the framework of other work to regenerate Paisley and will encourage more people to visit the town to see some of its stunning buildings and learn about its people and the town’s fascinating history.”
