USI Baseball hires Chris Ramirez as new head coach

The University of Southern Indiana announced its new leader for the school’s baseball program on Sunday.

Chris Ramirez is the new head coach, becoming the sixth man to lead the program in its 54-year history.

Ramirez comes to USI from Lenoir-Rhyne University, a Division II school in Hickory, North Carolina. In his five years there, Ramirez posted a 152-80 record, the program’s winningest single-season record. Before that, he was the head coach at Division II Illinois-Springfield, where he posted a 199-122-1 record in six seasons.

He was named Division II National Coach of the Year by the National College Baseball Writers Association in 2018.

At USI, Ramirez will replace Tracy Archuleta, who was announced as Indiana State University’s new head coach on June 21. Archuleta led the USI baseball team to two Division II national championships and five Division II College World Series appearances and was head coach when the program moved to Division I for the 2023 season.

“I am excited for the opportunity to lead the USI baseball program,” Ramirez said in a press release. “The Screaming Eagles have a rich tradition and history of success that I am excited to build upon. Our plan is to win championships in the Ohio Valley Conference and compete in the NCAA baseball tournament. I can’t wait to meet our current players and get to work.”

Ramirez, an Iowa native, was a Division I assistant coach at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi for six seasons before taking the top job at Illinois-Springfield. As a student-athlete, Ramirez was a two-time all-conference center fielder and closer at Kirkwood Community College before earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration from High Point University. He played two seasons for High Point and earned Big South All-Academic honors in 2005.

“We chose Chris because he is a winner and, like USI, has earned his success through hard work,” said Jon Mark Hall, USI’s athletic director, in a press release. “He has a blue-collar mentality that fits well with our athletic department and the university.” Ramirez and his wife, Lindsay, have three children.
