Lee County man arrested in connection with father’s death

LEESBURG – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Lee County man in connection with the death of his 69-year-old father.

The GBI has arrested 47-year-old Tommy Clinton Jones of Lee County and charged him with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the death of his father, Tommy Lee Jones, 69.

At approximately 3:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 4, 2024, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office requested that the GBI conduct a death investigation. Preliminary information indicates that Lee County Sheriff’s officers responded to a home in the 1400 block of Smithville Road in Leesburg after 911 dispatch received a shooting call. When officers arrived on the scene, they heard gunshots coming from inside the home. Officers yelled for Jones to come out of the home, and a standoff ensued. Jones eventually came out, and officers took him into custody. He was later booked into the Lee County Jail. Officers also took custody of a firearm during the incident.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Southwestern Judicial Circuit Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
