The Senate Committee on Government, Gaming, Tourism and Historic Preservation has advanced a bill sponsored by Senator Robert Singer (R-30) that would establish a federal definition of anti-Semitism and raise awareness of the significant increase in anti-Semitic incidents in New Jersey and on college campuses.

“Given the recent rise in anti-Semitic actions, it is imperative that we establish a basic definition of anti-Semitism to continue to combat these atrocities,” said Senator Singer. “In addition, the community outreach campaign aims to empower New Jersey residents to promote safety and collective action against bias-motivated criminal activity.”

Senator Singer’s bipartisan bill S-1292 establishes a state definition of anti-Semitism. Under the bill, the definition of anti-Semitism would be consistent with the definition adopted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) on May 26, 2016. The state definition would also include the IHRA’s “contemporary examples of anti-Semitism.”

The bill also provides $100,000 to the Attorney General’s Office to launch a public awareness campaign to encourage the reporting of bias-related crimes and ensure that anti-Semitic incidents are reported and appropriately addressed.
