Senator Chris Murphy argues Biden must “do more” to address voters’ concerns

Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) reiterated his support for President Joe Biden, who is seeking re-election this November, but acknowledged that the president “needs to do more” to convince voters that he is fit for the office.

Murphy questioned why post-debate discussions were largely about Biden’s mental health rather than former President Donald Trump’s “pathological lies.” However, he maintained that Biden’s performance at the first presidential debate did indeed raise questions among voters and that his first post-debate interview did not do much to address those concerns.

“Personally, I love Joe Biden,” Murphy said on CNN State of the Nation“I don’t know if Friday night’s interview did enough to answer those questions, and that’s why I think this week is going to be absolutely critical. I think the president needs to do more. I’m not advising this campaign, but if I were, I would probably suggest that the president go out and have a town hall meeting, that he give a press conference, and that he show the country that he’s still the same old Joe Biden.”

“Let’s be honest: I think there are still questions in the minds of many voters,” he added.

Murphy was also asked about a report that Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) is trying to persuade other Senate Democrats to get Biden to drop out. The Connecticut senator said he was unaware of such efforts and would let Warner speak for himself.

Murphy added that Biden could “absolutely” beat Trump in a potential rematch in November. He said if Biden could allay voters’ concerns about him, he would be “in a very good position” in the 2024 race.

During the presidential debate, several Democratic lawmakers called on Biden to withdraw from his re-election bid. Governor Maura Healey (D-MA), a close Biden ally, called on Biden to “carefully consider” pursuing his re-election bid.

Among those within the Democratic Party defending Biden is Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), who argued that Democrats calling for Biden’s resignation were “afraid” of Trump.

Biden’s 2024 re-election campaign announced a $50 million advertising campaign on Friday as the campaign seeks to “leverage high viewership and politically diverse audiences.” Some of these ads will run during the season premiere of The Bacheloretteand during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
