Two dead and more than a dozen injured in shooting in Detroit, Michigan State Police say

DETROIT (AP) — Two people were killed and 19 others injured in a shooting at a street festival in Detroit early Sunday, authorities said.

According to a post on social media platform X, Michigan State Police said no one was in custody and that they were assisting Detroit police with the investigation. The agency said its preliminary information indicates two people died and 19 others suffered “various injuries.”

Detroit police provided few details, confirming only that two people were killed in the shooting at an east Detroit apartment complex. A police statement Sunday afternoon, however, did not provide any information on the number of injured or the circumstances of the shooting.

“Investigators and forensic experts are currently analyzing all available evidence and will continue their work throughout the weekend,” police said in a statement on Sunday.

Police said a “comprehensive new street party strategy” would be presented in detail at a press conference on Monday with Police Chief James White and Mayor Mike Duggan.

Detroit police spokesman Dan Donakowski declined further comment. Duggan’s spokesman John Roach said the mayor would attend Monday’s news conference on “block club party safety strategy” but declined to comment on the shooting.

The shooting occurred in the midst of a violent holiday weekend nationwide. Violence and Mass shootings are increasing frequently in the summer months, especially around July 4. Researchers say the reason for this is a combination of factors, including more social gatherings and higher alcohol consumption.

State Rep. Mai Xiong, who represents the district where the shooting occurred, said she was “heartbroken.”

“During what should have been a joyous Independence Day weekend, we are instead confronted with the devastating reminder that gun violence is coming far too close to home,” she said in a statement.
